The Department of Physiology is a national leader in scientific research and education. National rankings, awards and recognition include:
- U.W. Physiology ranked 8th in the United States as measured by extramural funding in 2003 (reported by the National Institute of Health).
- Physiology received over $10,000,000 in extramural support in the 2003 fiscal year.
- The department is comprised of 23 faculty, 11 affiliate faculty, and 2 affiliate trainers.
- There are currently 49 graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in the laboratories of Physiology faculty.
- Since 2000, department faculty have published over 220 original research articles in areas as diverse as cardiovascular physiology, endocrinology, muscle physiology, and molecular, cellular and systems neuroscience.
- The U.W. Department of Physiology has developed an innovative M.S. in Biotechnology program that not only provides training for careers in this industry but also strengthens research ties between faculty and research laboratories.
- Faculty inventions have resulted in multiple issued U.S. patents and pending patent applications, and more than 50 licenses have been executed as a result of technologies developed in the department.
- Since 2000, faculty in the Department of Physiology have received three University of Wisconsin Campus System teaching awards recognizing their excellence in instructing medical students, graduate students, and over 1,100 students each year in the undergraduate allied health and biology programs.
